I have published 9 novels, 3 short story collections and 2 anthologies of travel writing. My novel, CREATION, about John James Audubon in Labrador, was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year for 2003. My latest novel is The Ghost Brush, published in May 2010 by HarperCollins Canada; it appeared in 2011 in the United States as THE PRINTMAKER'S DAUGHTER, and will be published in translation in Japan, Romania, and Quebec.

I helped establish Writers in Electronic Residence,  a nation-wide schools program connecting writers wherever they live with classrooms from the Arctic to Newfoundland to Vancouver Island. I helped plan and found  ‘Canadian Journalism for Foreign Trained Writers’, for refugee and immigrant writers, at Sheridan College. This year I'm adjunct faculty at the University of Toronto's Creative Writing Department. My latest project with immigrant women is The Shoe Project, where women write about the shoes that brought them to Canada, in conjunction with The Bata Shoe Museum.
